Bio
Utada was born on January 19th, 1983 in New York to a very musical family. Her mother Junko Utada was a famous Japanese singer during the 1970s under the name Keiko Fuji, and her father Teruzane Utada was a music producer. She was immersed in music from a young age, tagging along with her parents to the recording studio when she was just a child.
Utada is arguably the most successful Japanese female pop artist of her generation. Her first Japanese album, released in 1999, sold an astounding 10 million units and currently holds the honor of being the highest selling Japanese album of all time. Utada’s early success has allowed for a level of creative freedom rarely seen within the Japanese pop music scene, especially for an artist of such mainstream popularity. She writes, arranges, and produces all of her music, allowing her to continue evolving as an artist, and helping to maintain her relevance in the ever changing landscape of pop music.
Utada currently maintains two separate contractual record deals, with all Japanese material released under the name “Utada Hikaru” with EMI Music Japan, and all English releases under “Utada” with Island Records/Island Def Jam/Universal Music Group.
