Utada ends with IDJ/Universal; Signs worldwide contract with EMI Music

Utada (US), Utada Hikaru (JPN)

Big news today: Utada’s contract with Island Def Jam/Universal Music Group is officially over. Going forward, any and all music by Utada will be released through EMI Music, under the name “Hikaru Utada.” EMI Music and U3Music have signed a new global recording contract which will see her musical activities “in all countries and languages” united under one name. Roger Faxon, CEO of EMI Music, says “We are very happy that EMI’s global network, expertise and passion will continue to contribute to and support the music and creative vision of the superbly talented Hikaru Utada.” Exciting stuff.

Even tho she’s planning an hiatus…

  2. Thump says:

This is great news! I really hope Roger Faxon means what he says though.

this is good news IDJ/Universal i’m going to say this utada is not a toy so don’t abuse her personality especially her name !!! BANZAI !!! HIKKI !!! HIKKI !!! you’re the women !!!

  4. zettaiseigi says:

What makes this interesting is that she signed a new record deal right before she takes her hiatus. But either way, I think it’s a good move since she hardly went anywhere with IDJ.

  5. Kimoto says:

Great! Say “nevermore” with poor promotions! And don’t mess around with our Queen \:D/

  6. kami-sama says:

    Finally ):

  7. Hikki Love . says:

That gives us a great positive that she will continue to make Japanese and English releases and that she will return making music! I can’t wait.

This is great news! EMI will represent her much better than IDJ/UNI. The problem with IDJ is that they didn’t know how to promote her. I hope Hikaru will continue making Japanese & English music.

  9. itaikoon says:

This is definitely a good change. Cant wait to see what it will do for her in the years to come after her hiatus (however long her hiatus will be)…

  10. Jovie says:

This is definitely big news. What I wish though is that she would have done this sooner. If this were to happen around last year, she would have gotten better promotion, and the right promotion I would like to believe. All and all, this is still great news, and hopefully when she jumps off the hiatus bus, she’ll deliver more breathtaking, gorgeous, and truthful music. I’ll definitely be waiting. :D

  11. This is wonderful news for Hikki. She finally gets to call her own shots whenever she gets off her hiatus with her English releases. I’m sure if and when she decides to release more English material, she’ll be able to do it with pride.

  12. BluesFighter09 says:

Its about time; the only downside to news like this is why it didn’t happen sooner or in the first place altogether, but that’s neither here nor there now. However long she’s on break for, @ least we know if and when she indeed continues adding additions to her underrated and under-performing English discography she’ll be in much more capable hands that’ll push forth with a budget and creative expertise that’s worthwhile! Those works may never reach the acclaim or quality of her Japanese classics but @ least the notion of her becoming a true and viable global superstar in the future at some point is now a more shining possibility than it ever was w/ IDJ/Def Jam. Hopefully she’ll be the first but not the last Asian artist to make and break this mold (please take notes Jin Aksnishi, Se7en, Rain, Boa, and X Japan…)

  13. InnerRise says:

I don’t know how I feel about her English Music all being tagged under “Hikaru Utada” right along with her superior Japanese Music.

Couldn’t this mess with her Records that she’s achieved under the name “Utada Hikaru”?

  14. sakurablooms13 says:

This is so awesome!!! I’m so happy she decided to do this, so does this mean that her Japanese music will also be released in the States or what? Even so, I am happy to hear that she will still be releasing English language albums

  15. Alex0821 says:

Does anyone have any predictions as to whether/how this will affect how quickly her Japanese music gets put up on iTunes US? I don’t want to have to wait a really long time to download “Goodbye Happiness” legally (I’m not paying a million bucks to import it from Japan lol), so I’m hoping the fact that she no longer has a US label won’t affect anything with the new release.

  16. gantzman246 says:

Innerrise”I don’t know how I feel about her English Music all being tagged under “Hikaru Utada” right along with her superior Japanese Music.”

    Oh good lord.

Couldn’t this mess with her Records that she’s achieved under the name “Utada Hikaru”?

    No, why should it?

  17. I agree with Hikki Love . This means that she really still has plans of making music in the future.
And I actually thought of the same thing as InnerRise. I hope that they’ll keep the UTADA name.. just to differentiate which is which. Coz I really like the way UTADA and Utada Hikaru differs to each other. And maybe someday, it’ll happen that either UTADA and Utada Hikaru are competing with the top spot of Oricon or Billboard Japan! hahah! that’d be crazy awesome! ASTIG!
