Radio Airplay for “This One (Crying Like A Child)”?

I thought a song needs to be formally released before a radio station can play it.
It would be nice if there was some actual news from Utada and IDJ, this has become very frustrating.

Every song is a good song so it doesn’t matter what the next single is

I’m sad and disappointed in a way coz i tried to request CBTM here in the Philippines and the DJ told me that the song should be officially released here first before they can play the song. Or maybe they just didn’t have the song then. Maybe up until this time they don’t have it yet. haix..anyway, This One is not bad to be the next single.. well, i just thought that it’ll be best if that will be her last single for TITO.. and do you remeber that Poppin’ was also played in a NY radio station? (i’m sorry i forgot the specific name of the radio station..) ^_^

Hmm, the way the chart is dated, I’m guessing they might have just been testing it. The question is… are 51 spins in a month good or bad, considering its a relatively unknown artist?

I’m sure 51 spins is good for a song that isn’t well-known, by an artist who isn’t terribly well-known (in this country), especially considering it hasn’t been formally sent for adds yet.
This One might as well be the next single, there’s been a lot of news/rumors about it lately. I’ve been listening to it a lot lately because of this, and I really like this song and think it would do well. Not my first choice, but it’d do pretty well.

I’ve always thought This One should be a single, its the most mainstream song on the album besides Come Back To Me.

I agree that A&C is perfect for radio. However, a double A-side of This One/Dirty Desire should work just fine. Didn’t Exodus ‘04 do worse than Devil Inside on radio?

RJ, predicting Waking Up in Vegas would do well is like predicting Obama would win the election… after the election.
In terms of US listeners, Utada does not have the star power that Katy Perry (or Beyonce, or Jason Mraz) has. If she releases a song as boring and bland as A&C as her second single, you can kiss her American ambitions goodbye; even Elvis Duran wouldn’t want to touch that thing, and he played Poppin’ on his show for God’s sake. Dirty Desire would do pretty well, but it’s a bit too late-80’s/early-90’s for today’s audience, which is looking for something a bit more “now.” Hence my preference, On and On. Granted, the bassline should have been heavier, but it’s one of the only songs from TITO that anyone currently listening to Z100 would relate to. Keep in mind, these are people listening to Lady Gaga, and that says a lot about today’s listeners.
If she wants to release a slow song, let it be This One; at least there’s something to listen to and take from it, unlike the infernally uninteresting A&C. I’m still laughing about you calling that song “instantly memorable.”

Does every song released by a mainstream artist have to fit into some sort of niche and genre? Does it all have to be so formulaic?
what ever happening to just good sounding music? God, this is why I’m such a big Utada fan, she just makes music and doesn’t worry so much about fitting in.

I think Utada would sing EXODUS songs even at a TITO concert. Devil Inside is still one of her most well known English songs.

I hope she does a little bit of everything if she tours.

Seriously, the idea of what is an ”ideal” 2nd or which TITO tracks are the best for mass-audience appeal is a matter of personal backgrounds and preferences in the music, so we can argue over these matters from now until the end of time! What we AKK can agree on  for sure is though, is that if she, IDJ, and her more direct management and staff don’t pull out truly all the stops in promoting for the next step, be that a Double-A single, International Tour, or whatever else, NOTHING she or her fewer foreign fans put a stake on is going to take off fit to our expectations. The music industry climate has changed since she first debuted, is still rapdly changing, but where she is now artistically and personally can totally work amazing ONLY if people know that what she’s offering is out there to listen, buy, and enjoy in all aspects! Its just like what most of the positive early interviews and TITO reviews said: Utada’s worldwide success is not dependent on her singing/songwriting talent or other personal characteristics…its the MARKETING; and that in a FOREIGN industry as fickle as the U.S. (in terms of the music and the ethnic/life origins of its creators) makes all the world of difference! Just my 2 cents, but no matter what anyone else’s opinion on this is, I’m still always going to say that Utada’s success is incumbent on HER terms and her actions, and no other factors can stand in the way if she pursues it w/ the right goals in mind…

Agrees with RJ The only 2 songs that I have in mind that could have a chance to make a hit in the US are A&C and This One
A&C is memorable, catchy and simple plus it fits for people in any age
This One is a song that people may relate to themselves and both have not any retarded lyrics. Thats just my opinion =P

W/e happens happens. I really dont care how Utada sells here in the states. All I care about is the fact that I own a copy of TITO and that it was worth every cent (cept maybe the cent that bought the cover image). I love all of the songs (cept Poppin’) and regardless of whether other people care about Utada or not, the album made my day in the end. If she sells…great…I get to be all like “well….I was totally an Utada fan before she became famous here…yadayadayada…and if she doesnt…oh well. I believe she can be successful though…copies of the album are well stocked in alot of the places I’ve visited this summer…all she needs now is a hit song and boom. Take off.

The fact that she never rescheduled the promo tour she canceled because of her sickness 3 months ago just proves that she was never sick and just made it up because she didn’t want to do it.
A petition? That’s cute, I’m sure that’ll get her going now LOL.
We’ve begging for a concert or show from her for like 6 months now.
This is her second English album and she hasn’t done a single live show (NYC showcase doesn’t count). I’ve never heard of such a thing especially from a major artist on a major label trying to breakthrough in another country. Word of mouth promotion from live shows is 100x more effective (look at Imogen Heap) then doing some crappy radio interview on a pop radio station that wont even play your music (Z100 I’m looking at you).
She loves America so much that she has spent the last 4 months in Japan, she boarded her jet so quick after the Sephora events that she nearly gave the pilot whiplash. C’mon, I really think that she thinks that mainstream Americans are a bunch of loud,uncultured idiots with bad taste (I agree).
The handwriting is on the wall, TITO is dead and her English career is probably over too. TITO was a halfhearted effort anyway, can you really tell me with a straight face that it’s better then Exodus? please. Creative,original alternative pop > mainstream pop.
She had no ambition to make it in America anyway after Exodus flopped, that was her baby. TITO is just her fulfilling her contractual obligations with IDJ. If IDJ didn’t “bug” her for so long she wouldn’t have even bothered, she was so disinterested that she had other people produce it for her which is something she never does.
You all know it’s true, if she proves me wrong I would be shocked but I know she wont.
I’m also looking forward to her next Japanese project, so I’ll just wait and enjoy what she has given us so far.
I still love her to death I’m just telling it how I see it.

Ghostdog, I totally respect you having an open and honest opinion…but didn’t you say here and @ Utada.net that you we’re amazed @ how TITO turned out in full listening capacity (I believe even equalling it 2 Exodus, which the vast majority of critics and fans have)! Yes she has said (half-heartedly) before in interviews like in the most recent MUSICA magazine how she didn’t understand the American music market or wasn’t that impressed with it, but clearly that’s not the case if she CONTINUES making records this way despite their commercial success and she cites, oh, ABOUT 99% of her influences and inspirations being non-Japanese musicians (Jeff Buckley,Prince,TLC,The Police & Sting,and Leah Dizon, anyone?) Her English career is not over unless she wants it to be, not by how we falsely are perceiving it! And her faking being sick–w/ a more severe form of tonsilitis??? Please now, come on and give her the benefit of the doubt if your calling yourself a true fan. If nothing else, her delaying re-scheduling promotions means she just doesn’t want all the attention from the media and other people right now; Lets just respect the fact she wants some down time and is taking the break! Between the beginning of the HEART STATION era (namely the Boku Wa Kuma single in late 2006) and May 12th, TITO’s U.S. release physically, she’s been more active in marketing and such than she has been thus far in her life for god sake’s! Lets just please continue being patient in the midst of this news & update stagnation; She always makes the ‘comeback’ action that has all of us unanimously in love with her again w/out fail, so what makes you think she just isn’t getting ready to do it again? Just look @ how she would view all this bickering and bigotry we’re throwing, REALLY, not @ each other but on her!

I’m not going to sign that petition. I want Utada to continue what she is doing now, even if that means if she is having a break which she truly deserves.

Just in case the petitioners are reading this, those petitions NEVER work. I am not intending to be rude, but I have been to that site and have seen thousands of those petitions submitted per day, and none of them have ever been successful.

@itaikoon – i’m sure might of changed her mind because i don’t see or hear anything about her retiring so who knows what she’ll do; like kinghikari009 said: “we don’t know utada or communicate with her!” and first of all, i’m not obsessed, i just listen to her music as a normal fan.
