Radio Airplay for “This One (Crying Like A Child)”?
It appears that several Adult Contemporary radio stations (including KCVM-FM Mix 96.1 in Cedar Falls, Iowa) have been playing Utada’s “This One (Crying Like A Child)” for the past few weeks. The song has garnered a total of 51 spins on radio thus far, as reported by Mediabase. No word on whether the track will receive an official adds date.

Ghostdog added these pithy words on Aug 08 09 at 6:02 pmI thought a song needs to be formally released before a radio station can play it.
It would be nice if there was some actual news from Utada and IDJ, this has become very frustrating.
RJ added these pithy words on Aug 08 09 at 6:08 pm^ The official “Adds” date is essentially a suggested date for when stations should begin spinning a song; many stations will begin playing tracks early if they want to get a head start on a potentially hot track. This is especially true with really popular artists who are releasing new material.

renjeanteractive added these pithy words on Aug 08 09 at 10:13 pm“I thought a song needs to be formally released before a radio station can play it.“i agree. but RJ has a point. I’m sad and disappointed in a way coz i tried to request CBTM here in the Philippines and the DJ told me that the song should be officially released here first before they can play the song. Or maybe they just didn’t have the song then. Maybe up until this time they don’t have it yet. haix..anyway, This One is not bad to be the next single.. well, i just thought that it’ll be best if that will be her last single for TITO.. and do you remeber that Poppin’ was also played in a NY radio station? (i’m sorry i forgot the specific name of the radio station..) ^_^
tattoosonthesky added these pithy words on Aug 08 09 at 10:46 pmWell, that’s unexpected. However, This One (Crying Like A Child) always has me crying like a child. XDDD Beautiful, beautiful song. One of my fave tracks.

darkesaint added these pithy words on Aug 09 09 at 1:25 amHmm, the way the chart is dated, I’m guessing they might have just been testing it. The question is… are 51 spins in a month good or bad, considering its a relatively unknown artist?
xHeartStation added these pithy words on Aug 09 09 at 1:41 amI think 51 spins in a month is ok…song hasnt even been officially announced as a single yet…
Alex0821 added these pithy words on Aug 09 09 at 1:51 amI’m sure 51 spins is good for a song that isn’t well-known, by an artist who isn’t terribly well-known (in this country), especially considering it hasn’t been formally sent for adds yet.
This One might as well be the next single, there’s been a lot of news/rumors about it lately. I’ve been listening to it a lot lately because of this, and I really like this song and think it would do well. Not my first choice, but it’d do pretty well.
Keyblademaster354 added these pithy words on Aug 09 09 at 5:42 amVERY suprising that This One has been played on the radio! I really hope it “promotes itself” so that more radio stations will start to play This One

Its good 2 know she’s still up to the idea for the tour since evry1 keeps asking about it!
blackclown added these pithy words on Aug 09 09 at 2:57 pmI’ve always thought This One should be a single, its the most mainstream song on the album besides Come Back To Me.

RJ added these pithy words on Aug 12 09 at 12:04 amI’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: The only 2 tracks on TITO that have mainstream hit potential are “Apple And Cinnamon” and “Dirty Desire.” Vocally and melodically they have that special something that make them instantly memorable and PERFECT for radio (”Exodus ‘04″ was the only track off Exodus that really had a chance). I realize I’m not a professional A&R person, but I swear I’ve totally called everything from “Irreplaceable” to “Single Ladies” to “Waking Up in Vegas” to “Say It Right” to “I’m Yours” and any other number of hit songs hahaha I SWEAR!

Sugar Cat added these pithy words on Aug 12 09 at 10:56 amI agree that A&C is perfect for radio. However, a double A-side of This One/Dirty Desire should work just fine. Didn’t Exodus ‘04 do worse than Devil Inside on radio?
darkesaint added these pithy words on Aug 12 09 at 11:24 amIdk, for some strange reason I feel like TITO should’ve been released back in 2004 and Exodus released now. Just the way the pop scene is changing. With acts like Lady Gaga, Katy Perry and other that are alternative-esque popping up everywhere, that catchy mainstream sound of the past isn’t clicking anymore. Btw RJ, I have to call you out a little bit considering four of those hits you ‘predicted’ belonged to well established acts, so there was very little doubt those songs would be successful. As for “Say It Right”, Nelly (or her management team) was smart enough to jump on the Timbaland band-wagon back when it was still hot, so again no surprise there. I would actually disagree to the point that CBTM had the same amount of catchiness that all those songs had and yet was still a flop. Something tells me MCML-FYI or Poppin would do much better if going on the idea that alternative is definitely ‘in’ right now.

Alex0821 added these pithy words on Aug 12 09 at 2:18 pmRJ, predicting Waking Up in Vegas would do well is like predicting Obama would win the election… after the election.
In terms of US listeners, Utada does not have the star power that Katy Perry (or Beyonce, or Jason Mraz) has. If she releases a song as boring and bland as A&C as her second single, you can kiss her American ambitions goodbye; even Elvis Duran wouldn’t want to touch that thing, and he played Poppin’ on his show for God’s sake. Dirty Desire would do pretty well, but it’s a bit too late-80’s/early-90’s for today’s audience, which is looking for something a bit more “now.” Hence my preference, On and On. Granted, the bassline should have been heavier, but it’s one of the only songs from TITO that anyone currently listening to Z100 would relate to. Keep in mind, these are people listening to Lady Gaga, and that says a lot about today’s listeners.
If she wants to release a slow song, let it be This One; at least there’s something to listen to and take from it, unlike the infernally uninteresting A&C. I’m still laughing about you calling that song “instantly memorable.”
gantzman246 added these pithy words on Aug 12 09 at 2:26 pmI could picture hearing Dirty Desire on z100 to me it doesen’t sound dated at all. Shakira’s She Devil has this 70s funk sound to it and its recieving a lot of airplay plus the song and video is really good.
Though I do agree On&On should be released here in the states.
Ghostdog added these pithy words on Aug 12 09 at 5:15 pmDoes every song released by a mainstream artist have to fit into some sort of niche and genre? Does it all have to be so formulaic?
what ever happening to just good sounding music? God, this is why I’m such a big Utada fan, she just makes music and doesn’t worry so much about fitting in.
blackclown added these pithy words on Aug 12 09 at 5:31 pmI agree with Ghostdod, but if she doesn’t have any success in America what are the chances that she’ll do another English album again! I just want her to have success so she’ll continues to work here without feeling like a reject or an outcast.
gantzman246 added these pithy words on Aug 12 09 at 5:48 pmExactly, I would love to go to an Utada concert here in New York.
FiresEmblem added these pithy words on Aug 12 09 at 10:10 pmI really want to hear all the Exodus songs live, but the concert would be a ‘This Is The One’ themed concert. All the people who go there would be going for ‘TITO’, and would have no idea what’s going on when she starts singing ‘Hotel Lobby’ or any ol’ Exodus song. I’d much rather go to an ‘Exodus’ concert then a ‘TITO’ concert if I’m being honest, but either way, if Utada ever decides to tour, I’m hoping I’m there.

Alex, I thought Apple and Cinnamon was memorable as soon as I heard it. When she sings ‘Let’s not get started with the he said she said’, the second time, the piano in the background makes this minimal left turn that I immediately latched on to. The whole song is generally catchy. This One is almost on the same footing as A&C, being as it’s radio-friendly. But we might as well forget about ballads for now, as we aren’t having another one, I don’t think.
Sugar Cat added these pithy words on Aug 12 09 at 11:34 pmI think Utada would sing EXODUS songs even at a TITO concert. Devil Inside is still one of her most well known English songs.
wadester1990 added these pithy words on Aug 12 09 at 11:36 pmUtada already stated that if she were to tour, she would sing a little bit of everything (including Japanese) because that’s just what she does.
Hikki Love . added these pithy words on Aug 13 09 at 6:06 amI hope she does a little bit of everything if she tours.
Semantics added these pithy words on Aug 13 09 at 7:53 amI’m extremely happy that a double A side single is going to be released these few weeks and that “This One” is getting some decent airplay. However, all these will come to nought again if IDJ + Hikki don’t do enough promotion. Marketing is exceptionally important in the US market and hell, I’m sure we all want to see Hikki do well in the States no matter what. The way I see it, if TITO fails, many people will be thinking: if a top Asian artist so creatively exceptional and bilingual as Utada cannot properly break into the US market, I don’t know who else can. So I really hope the double single will at least propel Hikki to a where she deserves to be, especially given that it seems kind of unlikely that she’ll extend her contract with IDJ after TITO (just a thought).
kinghikari009 added these pithy words on Aug 13 09 at 1:57 pmSeriously, the idea of what is an ”ideal” 2nd or which TITO tracks are the best for mass-audience appeal is a matter of personal backgrounds and preferences in the music, so we can argue over these matters from now until the end of time! What we AKK can agree on for sure is though, is that if she, IDJ, and her more direct management and staff don’t pull out truly all the stops in promoting for the next step, be that a Double-A single, International Tour, or whatever else, NOTHING she or her fewer foreign fans put a stake on is going to take off fit to our expectations. The music industry climate has changed since she first debuted, is still rapdly changing, but where she is now artistically and personally can totally work amazing ONLY if people know that what she’s offering is out there to listen, buy, and enjoy in all aspects! Its just like what most of the positive early interviews and TITO reviews said: Utada’s worldwide success is not dependent on her singing/songwriting talent or other personal characteristics…its the MARKETING; and that in a FOREIGN industry as fickle as the U.S. (in terms of the music and the ethnic/life origins of its creators) makes all the world of difference! Just my 2 cents, but no matter what anyone else’s opinion on this is, I’m still always going to say that Utada’s success is incumbent on HER terms and her actions, and no other factors can stand in the way if she pursues it w/ the right goals in mind…
kinghikari009 added these pithy words on Aug 13 09 at 2:00 pmPersonally me, its been such a long time waiting for new music, or ANYTHING for that matter regarding Utada, I couldn’t care less what the next single (Japanese,English,Pop,Dance, whatever!) or step she takes is as long as she does SOMETHING! You (meaning her more attentive fanbase) would’ve sworn she wasn’t living anymore from the lack of updates we’ve had since literally May 12th…I know she needed the break and was sick, but COME BACK TO us, Hikki! Srry for double posting…
Snigelskit added these pithy words on Aug 13 09 at 4:23 pmAgrees with RJ The only 2 songs that I have in mind that could have a chance to make a hit in the US are A&C and This One
A&C is memorable, catchy and simple plus it fits for people in any age
This One is a song that people may relate to themselves and both have not any retarded lyrics. Thats just my opinion =P

blackclown added these pithy words on Aug 13 09 at 6:37 pmSHE SAID, THAT WHEN SHE DOES A CONCERT SHE DOESN’T CATER TO ONE ALBUM, SHE SINGS ALL OF THE CROWD’S FAVORITES INSTEAD
Alex0821 added these pithy words on Aug 13 09 at 10:55 pmFor the record, Ghostdog, I agree with you – good music is good music no matter what genre it does/doesn’t fit into; most of my favorite Utada songs I can’t even categorize (what is Beautiful World??). But I was talking about which song I think would do best as a single in terms of radioplay and sales, not what song I think is best in general. And here in America especially, those are two VERY different things.
But apparently I’m totally wrong because somehow A&C is the second-highest-selling song off the album on iTunes, and I honestly can’t fathom why. (And I refuse to believe it’s because it’s the second-best song on the album, I literally refuse to believe it XD).
xHeartStation added these pithy words on Aug 13 09 at 11:34 pmW/e happens happens. I really dont care how Utada sells here in the states. All I care about is the fact that I own a copy of TITO and that it was worth every cent (cept maybe the cent that bought the cover image). I love all of the songs (cept Poppin’) and regardless of whether other people care about Utada or not, the album made my day in the end. If she sells…great…I get to be all like “well….I was totally an Utada fan before she became famous here…yadayadayada…and if she doesnt…oh well. I believe she can be successful though…copies of the album are well stocked in alot of the places I’ve visited this summer…all she needs now is a hit song and boom. Take off.

Ghostdog added these pithy words on Aug 14 09 at 5:43 pmThe fact that she never rescheduled the promo tour she canceled because of her sickness 3 months ago just proves that she was never sick and just made it up because she didn’t want to do it.
A petition? That’s cute, I’m sure that’ll get her going now LOL.
We’ve begging for a concert or show from her for like 6 months now.
This is her second English album and she hasn’t done a single live show (NYC showcase doesn’t count). I’ve never heard of such a thing especially from a major artist on a major label trying to breakthrough in another country. Word of mouth promotion from live shows is 100x more effective (look at Imogen Heap) then doing some crappy radio interview on a pop radio station that wont even play your music (Z100 I’m looking at you).
She loves America so much that she has spent the last 4 months in Japan, she boarded her jet so quick after the Sephora events that she nearly gave the pilot whiplash. C’mon, I really think that she thinks that mainstream Americans are a bunch of loud, uncultured idiots with bad taste (I agree).
The handwriting is on the wall, TITO is dead and her English career is probably over too. TITO was a halfhearted effort anyway, can you really tell me with a straight face that it’s better then Exodus? please. Creative, original alternative pop > mainstream pop.
She had no ambition to make it in America anyway after Exodus flopped, that was her baby. TITO is just her fulfilling her contractual obligations with IDJ. If IDJ didn’t “bug” her for so long she wouldn’t have even bothered, she was so disinterested that she had other people produce it for her which is something she never does.
You all know it’s true, if she proves me wrong I would be shocked but I know she wont.
I’m also looking forward to her next Japanese project, so I’ll just wait and enjoy what she has given us so far.
I still love her to death I’m just telling it how I see it.
Prove me wrong Utada!!! Go ahead make my day.
barried added these pithy words on Aug 14 09 at 6:07 pmno no no..
original, creative, alternative doesn’t better than mainstream. So does mainstream, it isn’t better than the original, creative, alternative.
It just the matter of taste.
Stop judging what the other people should like.
kinghikari009 added these pithy words on Aug 14 09 at 6:54 pmGhostdog, I totally respect you having an open and honest opinion…but didn’t you say here and @ Utada.net that you we’re amazed @ how TITO turned out in full listening capacity (I believe even equalling it 2 Exodus, which the vast majority of critics and fans have)! Yes she has said (half-heartedly) before in interviews like in the most recent MUSICA magazine how she didn’t understand the American music market or wasn’t that impressed with it, but clearly that’s not the case if she CONTINUES making records this way despite their commercial success and she cites, oh, ABOUT 99% of her influences and inspirations being non-Japanese musicians (Jeff Buckley,Prince,TLC,The Police & Sting, and Leah Dizon, anyone?) Her English career is not over unless she wants it to be, not by how we falsely are perceiving it! And her faking being sick–w/ a more severe form of tonsilitis??? Please now, come on and give her the benefit of the doubt if your calling yourself a true fan. If nothing else, her delaying re-scheduling promotions means she just doesn’t want all the attention from the media and other people right now; Lets just respect the fact she wants some down time and is taking the break! Between the beginning of the HEART STATION era (namely the Boku Wa Kuma single in late 2006) and May 12th, TITO’s U.S. release physically, she’s been more active in marketing and such than she has been thus far in her life for god sake’s! Lets just please continue being patient in the midst of this news & update stagnation; She always makes the ‘comeback’ action that has all of us unanimously in love with her again w/out fail, so what makes you think she just isn’t getting ready to do it again? Just look @ how she would view all this bickering and bigotry we’re throwing, REALLY, not @ each other but on her!
xHeartStation added these pithy words on Aug 14 09 at 7:19 pmYou know…this is a bit off topic…but that article where Hikki condemns Disney as not paying enough, and where she says that TITO was only a contract commitment, and where she said she doesnt speak “mexican”…was that interview ever proven as authentic? I must have missed the news. I mean, she called Timbaland a loser? I find all this highly out of character.
Hikki Love . added these pithy words on Aug 15 09 at 1:31 amI’m not going to sign that petition. I want Utada to continue what she is doing now, even if that means if she is having a break which she truly deserves.
