That’s not good. I just want her to promote and release her single! I’m sure she’s better now. But that’s around 9000 physical copies sold, which is bound to increase when the other singles are released. So all and all, this is still doing well considering.

-Forgot to mention.
Brilliant banner RJ. =) That picture is one of my favourites from the set…the lighting is stunning.

barried added these pithy words on May 27 09 at 3:25 pm

Well something better happen soon or This Is The One is gonna turn into another failure.
This should be Utada’s itinerary for June.

1. Come back to America.
2. Post in myspace, blog.
3. New single.
4. New music video
5. TV talk show appearances
6. A magazine photoshoot.
7. Live shows.

If IDJ and Utada really care about the success of this album they are not showing it.
It’s almost seems like Utada couldn’t wait to get out of America and back to Japan where she has been now for 2 months.

Ghostdog added these pithy words on May 27 09 at 3:37 pm

It’s not bad at all, considering CBTM is essentially dead at radio and that promotion had to be stopped. I thought for sure she would be out of the top 200.

RJ added these pithy words on May 27 09 at 3:41 pm

I totally agree with Ghostdog. It’s better IDJ schedule more promo right now.

Raito added these pithy words on May 27 09 at 3:54 pm

I agree with RJ on this one. CBTM is practically nonexistent now and so it’s good that she has still managed to chart. Not a lot of artists can say they can chart without radio airplay and promotion.

Quasar added these pithy words on May 27 09 at 4:13 pm

Yeah, that’s not too bad considering there is no promotion whatsoever. I’m surprised stores still have enough copies to sell…GO ON TELEVISION, please?

kongo89 added these pithy words on May 27 09 at 9:17 pm

So, did the karaoke thing happen yet? lol
Utada ought to make the most out of the summer. At least while everyone’s got time to kill.

NOooo its goin down….. =/

Fannboyie added these pithy words on May 27 09 at 10:03 pm

RJ, I agree. I’m pleasantly surprised it’s still in the Billboard Top 200, considering stores were understocked and all publicity ceased since the cancellation. Maybe the Best Buy re-stock, $7.99 ad, helped a bit.

Bluevilla added these pithy words on May 28 09 at 2:35 am

Stores were not understocked.

InnerRise added these pithy words on May 28 09 at 3:12 am

The FYE I went to had dozens of copies. I just wish more types of stores were carrying it (e.g. Barnes and Noble, which is two minutes away from where I live).
Does reported sales include iTunes purchases of the album? Because it was in the Pop Top 10 for so long, I would’ve thought it would have sold more than 16,000 copies (but what do I know).

Alex0821 added these pithy words on May 28 09 at 12:24 pm

Several reports state stores had only 2-3 copies. The Borders I’ve been to were out of stock, with limited quantities. Target 0, Walmart 2.

Bluevilla added these pithy words on May 28 09 at 2:24 pm

I hope we aren’t getting our hopes up, in thinking the new single will be released this month, only for it to be pushed back until July.

FiresEmblem added these pithy words on May 28 09 at 2:52 pm

Several reports and pictures show that stores had a bountiful amount of copies. More than were expected. In general people seem to be finding the Album just fine.

InnerRise added these pithy words on May 28 09 at 4:16 pm

the dance compilation album “Just Dance” is currently No. 9 on iTunes. Like everyone here knows, Utada’s Come Back to Me is on it but it’s not as popular as other songs on the album. if we buy the individual song and it gets more popular on the album, it might a good little promotion we can do on iTunes. and the remix is actually pretty hot!

gen added these pithy words on May 29 09 at 4:58 am

bad news. good news is amazon sells the album really cheap.

itakepills added these pithy words on May 29 09 at 11:14 am

I’m sure NYC, sacramento, philly or other populated areas where there is a large enough Asian population/Jpop fanboys or where radio played CBTM, they’d probably stock up on TITO, elsewhere…
they probably have 1 copy in every 5 stores so that’s why some people have a tough time finding TITO

laiwingnang added these pithy words on May 29 09 at 2:38 pm

You can’t be sure of such a huge generalizaion.

InnerRise added these pithy words on May 29 09 at 5:16 pm

I don’t think anyone should be worried about sales figures as she’s still an unknown to the general populace. The important thing is how much promotion she puts into the U.S. As long as she has the hunger and the drive to go out there and make people listen to her music, conquering the U.S. music scene won’t be too much of a problem.

darkesaint added these pithy words on May 29 09 at 9:48 pm

Let’s not forget that the album was #18 on iTunes, #2 (for a short while) for Pop. That’s quite the accomplishment.
I’ll bet a lot of people bought the album on iTunes throughout the two months it was available before the physical release, and then had no reason to buy a physical copy once it came out (we can’t all buy multiple versions, and copies for our friends); it might have charted even higher than #69 had it been made available digitally and physically at the same time.
It seems like so many of you are unhappy with her current numbers and want her to chart higher and higher, but then choose the “unique and interesting” MCML-FYI as your choice for second single, when many of the more intelligent people on this blog have agreed that it would not do particularly well on American radio. Which is it?

Alex0821 added these pithy words on May 30 09 at 12:02 am

Let’s rate Her Albums!

http://new.music.yahoo.com/utada/albums/

Naka added these pithy words on May 30 09 at 7:13 am

why did she fall from 69th to 137th?

Bernardo added these pithy words on May 30 09 at 7:28 am

^ because her sales were lower than number 136 but higher than #138 .LoL.

barried added these pithy words on May 30 09 at 10:22 am

^^ Because CBTM is pretty much off the air, and there’s no promotion for the album whatsoever. All of us ran out to get the album the week it came out, and now sales for the second week are significantly lower because everyone who knows about Utada already bought the album the first week, or in the TWO MONTHS it was available on iTunes beforehand.

Alex0821 added these pithy words on May 30 09 at 1:42 pm

I want Utada to sell better. I want “Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence – FYI” to be the 2nd Single. I’m Intelligent.
That’s what it is.
Anyone who thinks otherwise because their opinion differs is ignorant. Of course we all respect each other’s opinions here *COUGH* so this couldn’t possibly apply to anyone present.

InnerRise added these pithy words on May 31 09 at 3:40 am

I’m sorry to be blunt, but in my opinion, anyone who thinks/wants “Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence – FYI” to be the 2nd single off “This Is The One” has no grasp on the American mainstream radio market. There are so many things wrong with choosing it as a radio single, from the title to the lyrics to the tempo. Yes, it’s a really great track, but it is really not built for American radio. If Island Def Jam decides to go with it as a single I will be highly HIGHLY disappointed, given the handful of other (much more) radio friendly tracks on the album.

And that’s my 2 cents.

RJ added these pithy words on May 31 09 at 11:26 am

^ Hikki has nothing to lose and everything to gain if she releases FYI as a single.
CBTM was supposed to “radio friendly” and “safe” and look what happened, they still didn’t play it on the radio and it barely charted.
It’s time to take a chance, FYI will make her stand out and make people take notice. American mainstream radio sucks ass! it needs a shot in the arm and FYI is just the song. The lyrics are not that strange either, ever listen to Queen? Some of their songs lyrics are quirky and bizaare they did fine.Sometimes it’s ok to be a little weird and not be a boring and generic.

Ghostdog added these pithy words on May 31 09 at 12:38 pm

FYI and America don’t mix.

camouflage added these pithy words on May 31 09 at 1:01 pm

itsjustwhatever92 added these pithy words on May 31 09 at 1:23 pm

Let me be blunt. Think what you want. I don’t think less of you for disagreeing with me. Nor do I assume I know who you are based off of what song you want for a measly Single. Not to mention we’re discussing the ordering of Singles here, not QUANTUM PHYSICS. It’s not an exact Science as to what will work and what won’t. I do think less of the sad individuals who would tell me how I am and how much I know based off of a freaking Single pick. The only thing you know for sure is who you are. Don’t disrespect me and don’t act as if you have a Ph.D in song picking and all else must agree with you or be ridiculed. Go produce some tracks, make a hit, create a star and then I’ll start consulting you on what I should think. Until then, “FYI I’m gonna be up all night. I’ll see you later. Call me. You know my number.”

InnerRise added these pithy words on May 31 09 at 1:37 pm

As long as the next single isnt Automatic Part II or Poppin, I’m fine with it. Preferable, On and On or Dirty Desire. Takin’ my money back would be my next choice, followed by Apple and Cinnamon, FYI, Crying like a child, and then Me Muero.

xHeartStation added these pithy words on May 31 09 at 3:09 pm

I don’t think Merry Christmas Mr.Lawrence – FYI will be a good 2nd single… however, it’ll be a GREAT 3rd or 4th single after Utada obtains popularity. Everyone is complaining about how unfit it is for radio airplay, and how it just won’t sit well with radio culture. But after Utada releases singles that place higher on the charts, and that are radio friendly, then maybe FYI stands a chance. However, the name does pose a bit of a problem, and FYI is the most unique song on the album. It’s like releasing ‘Sanctuary’ or ‘Simple and Clean’ out as a single. It would be great, as they are FANTASTIC songs. But they aren’t fit for radio play. Maybe a game theme, but not radio play. And I suppose that’s all we are focusing on. There are plenty of singles, especially those from indie artists and alternative rock bands, that dish out singles that don’t usually get played on the radio, but do have massive success. And, hah, let’s stop the bickering people. Nobody has a better knowledge on radio airplay then any other person here. Most of us only like Jpop, ASIAN music, and random indie artists. Rarely is it that we find ourselves enjoying the likes of Britney Spears, and etc. And Utada’s album is Utada pop. Not britney pop. Or bubble gum pop, as she calls it. And that’s why we love it. So both are likely singles. And again. This is what I feel. Just not as blunt as others. xD

FiresEmblem added these pithy words on May 31 09 at 4:00 pm

^ Both as in radio friendly songs like ‘On and On’, or ‘This One’, to more creative and innovative songs like ‘FYI’, or ‘Me Muero’.

FiresEmblem added these pithy words on May 31 09 at 4:02 pm

I do agree with FiresEmblem. FYI doesn’t fit the US radio-market. for summer, Dirty Desire or On And On would be better recieved by the audiences of American radios. But who knows, we’re not talking about science. ;P

Bernardo added these pithy words on May 31 09 at 4:43 pm

Pokerface… Boom Boom Pow… Adam Lambert… By the definition repeated on this board, these songs and singer are nowhere near ‘radio-friendly’ and yet they are praised and over-played by many stations/television shows. I think the American market is on its way to a more mature/eclectic radio mix, so FYI should not be dubbed as a ‘loser track’ and actually given a chance. Kudos to whoever pointed out CBTM’s ’safe’ yet low charting capabilities…

darkesaint added these pithy words on May 31 09 at 5:47 pm

Whether the “Wonder” Girls win that pointless poll or not, everybody knows, they dont stand a dog crap of a chance in making it here in the U.S (oh yeah didnt even make a debut yet). Learn English, get de-plasticfied, and learn a bit of dancing. Come back and maybe they’ll make some good backup vocals for a community college choir or something idunnodontcare. Sorry bout the rant but its just plain ugly and im really angry that their fans are abusing the voting system. Whatever. In the end I know who will be the one.

Does anyone know where Utada is right now? We haven’t heard from her for a long time.

FinalThrottle added these pithy words on May 31 09 at 6:01 pm

I can’t imagine how awesome and fun a music video for FYI would look like ( if Utada picks the right director) but I think it has great potential and it makes the idea of FYI being picked for he next single that much more intriguing.

Ghostdog added these pithy words on May 31 09 at 6:07 pm

I agree! If Utada and DefJam really promote FYI it will be a very popular song, because everyone I know that hear FYI like it.

Does anyone know where Utada is right now? We haven’t heard from her for a long time.[2]

Bernardo added these pithy words on May 31 09 at 6:20 pm

UTADA IS STILL VIRTUALLY UNKNOWN IN THE STATES.
So, no matter how unique and beautiful her 2nd single is, nobody will heard it.
Please release something generic first, after she gain popularity she can release whatever she want.

Just look back to 10 years ago. American R&B is very popular in Japan and Utada came with Automatic which is very R&B. Imagine if Utada released HEART STATION in 1998, people will ignore her

barried added these pithy words on May 31 09 at 6:30 pm

I don’t believe the type of music Utada started off with in Japan was popular until she actually came out with it and made it popular because nobody else was really doing it. Practically introducing the genre to Japan. I love how that happened. Perfect Example.

InnerRise added these pithy words on Jun 01 09 at 4:33 am

oh man. you cant blame anyone really. i don’t live in the US and i’m not sure how famous is she there. but here in Asia, she is not as famous as she used to be (except in Japan). i am hearing more about ayumi and namie actually.

dral added these pithy words on Jun 01 09 at 7:28 am

Well Ayumi and Namie constantly release more and they both tour much more and are either touring right now or just finishing up while Utada never tours and her last Japanese single was last year. So naturaly this is why you’re hearing their name more, not that you can base Utada’s popularity solely off of what you, one person, are hearing. I’m not really sure what most of your post had to do with anything going on in America either but there you go.

InnerRise added these pithy words on Jun 01 09 at 12:12 pm

@dral.
What part of Asia do you live in?
If you see MTV Asia and Channel [V], Utada is everywhere.
While the other J-Pop artist only showed in some program like MTV JK Hits or [V]’s Battle of the Pop Asia vs. Asia or [V] Tunes.
But Utada? She’s on Primetime Hits, MTV Lunch Quikies, Breakfast Club, even Chart Attack and [V] Countdown (she’s peaked at number 1).

barried added these pithy words on Jun 01 09 at 2:50 pm

@innerise.
American R&B (exampke: TLC) was popular in Japan when Utada released her first single. That’s why Cubic U’s Precious sold million copies. Then Utada is the first that introduce the R&B in Japanese, so she was booming at that time.

barried added these pithy words on Jun 01 09 at 3:02 pm

but in the states she can’t just release a single that’s very different of what people use to listen. first of all, she has to release something commom on the US, after she can sing anything.
Huge produccers, like timbaland and tricky, like her songs and her style, but other thing is public. she has to attract listeners.
Anyway… WHERE IS UTADA!?!?!

Bernardo added these pithy words on Jun 01 09 at 6:51 pm

She did release something common. Very common. And here we are…..complaining and disappointed. :/

InnerRise added these pithy words on Jun 01 09 at 11:19 pm

^ yeah, and she released singles from Exodus which was deemed non-mainstream and look what happened there as well.
I don’t think the public will have problems with FYI, it’s the radio programmers who will close the door on it…well, this unknown artist with a weird song and strange song title, they won’t even give it a chance.

IDJ will probably have to send dirty desire or ON & ON to the stations and making a skanky Britney/Rihanna type of video and send that to VH-1/MTV and hope they’ll start playing it.

laiwingnang added these pithy words on Jun 02 09 at 6:40 am

I don’t see what anything on Exodus has to do with anything on “This Is The One”. Doesn’t compare at all thus you can’t compare. And I don’t see it as a weird song thus I don’t see them having a hard time playing the song. It’s all subjective. So it all depends on the person. Can’t generalize them all. I’ve never hoped Utada frequented U.Blog more than I do now. Hope she sees the poll and makes the right choice. It’s not as if our musical taste here is so eclectic that our poll represents no part of the American Music Market. I don’t give myself or anybody that much credit. We’re not special.

InnerRise added these pithy words on Jun 02 09 at 10:35 am

OFF-TOPIC: U.Blog is featured on Google Reader under “Top Recommendations” =D …at least that’s what I see on mine. just had to share. that’s already good promotion not only for this site, but for hikki as well. :)

all i want right now is for hikki to come out from under her hiding stone. am getting tired of waiting for her and what will happen next. somehow i feel like she has lost interest or got caught up with her japanese stuff. i dont think she was even mentioned during the event IDJ hosted which showcased their spring line up. =/ there might not even be a second single if this continues. should i blame them or hikki? i dont know anymore. :(

hisui added these pithy words on Jun 02 09 at 10:53 am

FYI isn’t a weird song at all the problem is that young people nowadays listen to so much generic pop radio that their idea of what a good pop song is based on that and everything that doesn’t fit into that criteria is considered “weird”.
Listen to some 80’s and early 90’s pop music and tell me how weird FYI really is.
By the way , 80’s and 90’s pop music >>>>>>>>>>>>> 2000 pop music.

If Hikki released songs like FYI,Hotel Lobby, Me Muero or Kremlin Dusk in that time period it would be considered quite normal and all the songs would be hits.
The music industry in America is all about image and American Idol types and good original pop music by people who actually have talent continues to be driven underground.

Ghostdog added these pithy words on Jun 02 09 at 11:13 am

At E3 the trailer for the new Kingdom Hearts DS game was played and Utada’s “Sanctuary” was playing during. Promotion! I’ll take what I can get at this point. First time hearing the song on tv since Kingdom Hearts 2 promotional commercials. Twas nice.

InnerRise added these pithy words on Jun 02 09 at 11:44 am

you people are missing the point. Whether something qualifies as weird is very subjective, but to pop/rythmic radio nowadays, FYI is WEIRD with its oriental piano sampling as well as its lyrics. To hell with the 80s, 90s..it’s the past. If we’re in 80s/90s, then we won’t be having this FYI is radio friendly or not discussion….and can somebody smack Innerise upside the head, he’s debating for the sake of debating. We’re talking about whether Utada should go with radio-friendliness or FYI. She tried something less radio friendly with Exodus and she failed. She tried something generic with CBTM she failed too, but to a lesser extent. YOU CAN’T GENERALIZE and claim that releasing something COMMON like CBTM led her to where she is right now.

laiwingnang added these pithy words on Jun 02 09 at 11:46 am

Hello whoever said that nowadays mainstream sucks. Everyone have their own favorite.

Definitely not like the stuff she released for Exodus. No comparison in my opinion. You arrived 3 nanoseconds ago. Calm down. Wanting to smack me upside the head over what song I want for a single is the most ignorant and hilarious thing so far. Grow up kid. What’s to be mad about? I just hope Utada releases another Single period. If it’s what I want I’ll be ecstatic. If it isn’t, I’ll still be glad we got another one. It is not THIS serious. Everyone won’t agree with everyone. InnerRice, nobody is mad at you. You just need some sense knocked into you. Here’s your rebuttal thrown back at you…Who are you to decide that FYI is “not like the stuff she released for Exodus”? I don’t see that many people saying that FYI is radio friendly and similar to what’s on radio in the US these days…

laiwingnang added these pithy words on Jun 02 09 at 6:49 pm

^I can decide that for myself because it’s my opinion and I clearly stated, “In My Opinion”. I’m not telling you what you’re talking about based off of my logic. You basing the topic of the discussion off of your opinion and dictating what everyone else is talking about is a no. Simple. Thinking you need to knock something into someone because you don’t like what they think is primitive ignorance. It’s okay to disagree. Calm down and stop getting mad over Songs.
You don’t see it because you just joined a minute ago.
FiresEmblem:
Yeah, I’m hearing different stuff too. I don’t know if any of it is true. I heard that she’s doing a new song for “Kingdom Hearts 3″ and “Birth By Sleep” on the PSP.
